چکیده

Rigorous cross-property bounds that connect the effective thermal conductivity k. (or the electrical conductivity a.) and the effective bulk modulus K. of any isotropic, two-phase composite were recently derived by the authors. Here we reformulate these bounds and apply them to porous rocks with dry or fluid-filled pores. It is shown that knowledge of the effective conductivity can yield sharp estimates of the effective bulk modulus (and vice versa), even in cases where there is a wide disparity in the phase properties. The bounds yield, in particular, relations between the formation factor and the bulk modulus of the porous medium. By using the same approach we obtain new relations between the bulk moduli of a dry porous material and the bulk modulus of the same material with fluid-filled pores that are more general than the traditional Gassmann equation. The Gassmann formula for the bulk modulus of the fluid-saturated porous medium is shown to correspond to a lower bound on this quantity. Limiting cases that we consider include cracked materials with dry and fluid-saturated pores. Theoretical results are tested against experimental measurements of the effective bulk modulus of dry and water-saturated Westerly granite and sandstone samples. We found good agreement between our cross-property bounds and the experimental d•ta, even when the experimental data depart from the Gassmann formula. Our results add new insight to understanding of the properties of the porous media. They show that the Gassmann approximation works well for rocks with high porosity but needs to be corrected for rocks with high crack-type porosity.

Eeective Stress for Transport Properties of Inhomogeneous Porous Rock

General e ective-stress rules are derived for various physical properties of inhomogeneous porous rocks. Some rigorous relations arising in the analysis show that the uid (pore) pressure pf is least e ective at counteracting the changes caused by con ning pressure for the solid (grain) volume; pf is more e ective for the total (solid plus pore) volume; pf is still more e ective for the pore vol...

Numerical modeling of stress-dependent permeability

In this paper, conceptual models are presented to identify the effects of solid deformation on the changes in rock permeabilities for (a) fractured media, (b) intact media, and (c) fractured porous media subjected to external loads, all in steady state conditions. Finite element schemes are then developed with embedded correlations between induced strain and modified permeability to simulate th...

Estimate the Effective Elastic Properties of Digitized Porous Rocks by Inverting the Cracks Unresolved

Current imaging technique such as micro X-ray CT can provide us detailed 3D micro-structures of porous rocks that can be used in numerical simulation so as to predict elastic properties of rocks saturated with different fluids. However, limited by the resolution the imaging process can provide, we usually lose the small features of rocks such as cracks and micro-pores, consequences of which can...

Nuclear magnetic relaxation of liquids in porous media

Nuclear magnetic relaxation is useful for probing physical and chemical properties of liquids in porous media. Examples are given on high surface area porous materials including calibrated porous silica glasses, granular packings, plaster pastes, cement-based materials and natural porous materials, such as sandstone and carbonate rocks. Here, we outline our recent NMR relaxation work for these ...

Predicting tensile strength of rocks from physical properties based on support vector regression optimized by cultural algorithm

The tensile strength (TS) of rocks is an important parameter in the design of a variety of engineering structures such as the surface and underground mines, dam foundations, types of tunnels and excavations, and oil wells. In addition, the physical properties of a rock are intrinsic characteristics, which influence its mechanical behavior at a fundamental level. In this paper, a new approach co...
